Where to Experience a San Jose Magician? Inside the Winchester Mystery House

In the room, a woman insists she has been making every choice freely. Her own decisions, her own free will, fully in control. Then I show her that every one of those choices was quietly influenced before she ever made them. The gasps come first. Then the nervous laughter, because nobody quite knows how to say out loud what they just felt. It is one of those moments you have to be there to understand. And it happened inside the most mysterious house in America.
So where is the best place to experience magic in San Jose? It makes sense that it would be somewhere already shrouded in mystery. For many people, one iconic landmark comes to mind: the Winchester Mystery House.
There is something fitting about performing the unexplainable inside the most unexplainable house in the country. Two mysteries under one roof. One is a physical puzzle nobody can solve. The other happens in people’s minds.
A San Jose Magician Comes Home to the Winchester Mystery House
I grew up a San Jose native and visited the Winchester House several times throughout my life, so it is an understatement to say I was thrilled when their team reached out about bringing a magic show to their lineup. As a professional San Jose magician and mentalist, I have performed in hundreds of venues and theaters across California. But staging a San Jose magic show inside the Winchester House brought a whole new level of mystery and excitement! There is already a kind of magic in the air in that place, and I cannot think of a more perfect setting for this style of show.
For decades, the mystery surrounding Sarah Winchester and her endlessly built home has drawn thousands of curious visitors every year. Staircases that lead nowhere. Doors that open into walls. Nothing is quite what it seems. The house is a true San Jose landmark, recognized across the globe, and the chance to add to that story in even a small way is a genuine honor.
What is Mind & Magic?
When it came time to create the show, I asked myself what I could do that was not just amazing but also a little uncanny, something that matched the atmosphere of where it takes place. My search for inspiration began with Sarah Winchester herself. Her decades of nonstop construction offered no shortage of ideas.
Mind & Magic is a magic show built from interactive magic that happens right in your hands, clean humor, plenty of audience participation, and most importantly, mentalism and mind reading. It is a one-hour show in the Carriage House beside the main mansion, a space that gave us more room and flexibility than a traditional ballroom and let us welcome more guests. The show invites people to decide for themselves what is fact and what is fiction.
The house does half the work before I even start. The mystery in the walls primes people for the mystery in the show.
The Moments People Never Forget
One of my favorite routines begins with an audience member taking a book, flipping through the pages, and locking a single random word in their mind. As a mentalist, I am able to tell them exactly what they are thinking. But it does not stop in their mind. When they go to reopen the book, the page is gone, neatly folded and tucked away in another guest’s pocket across the room. Truly unexplainable, and truly unforgettable!
It is not all serious mind games, though. There is warmth and lightheartedness throughout, a full journey of oohs and aahs, laughter, astonishment, and even a hint of danger. (Don’t worry, Sarah and I both promise to keep you perfectly safe.) The show closes with a moment that includes everyone in the audience, no matter where they are seated, with the magic happening in their own hands. For me, that shared experience is the whole point.
What This San Jose Venue Taught Me About Every Show
Performing in an intimate, theatrical, slightly eerie setting is different from a corporate event ballroom, and it sharpened how I read a room. Whether I am at the Winchester House, a holiday party, or a company offsite, the goal is the same: create moments people talk about long after, and bring a group together around something genuinely surprising. That is what a great magic show should do anywhere!
What Guests Are Saying
Wow. Just came back from Mind & Magic at the Winchester Mystery House and it was beyond amazing. Spencer was so entertaining and the hour FLEW by. It was absolutely mind blowing and was nonstop high energy. I can’t stress how entertaining it was. Throw away all your conventional thoughts around magician entertainment and be prepared to laugh, wonder and be legitimately amazed.
