Breaking the Ice: How a Corporate Event Magician Boosts Networking

Writer: Spencer GreySpencer Grey

Imagine this. You are at a corporate event. You're surrounded by strangers holding a drink that you don't really want. Trying to think of something to say that doesn't sound awkward. Sound familiar? Now picture this...

A corporate event magician approaches your group, pulls out a deck of cards and amazes you with the most incredible magic trick you've ever seen. Your entire group is astonished! The magician is funny and everyone is laughing. Suddenly, you no longer feel the pressure, the magician has just broken the ice and allowed for everyone to share a common experience.

The magician leaves, and everything about the energy has changed. That's the power of magic. It doesn't just entertain people, it transforms the way that people network.

Hi, my name is Spencer Grey and I am a professional corporate event magician. Today I'll be talking about how networking, while an important part of corporate events, can often feel a bit awkward and even feel forced. Next we'll look at how hiring a magician can provide interactive entertainment.

So ask yourself this question: how can we make a networking event feel more natural, engaging, and memorable?

The Problem with Traditional Networking Events

The answer, my friends, quite simply, is a magician. Networking can be challenging. It can be difficult starting conversations, especially if there is a lack of shared experiences to bond over. Oftentimes, a networking event will happen towards the end of a workday or the end of a convention.

Everybody already has low energy, especially during these long events. So it can be difficult to force yourself to participate and even meet new people.

Corporate event magicians are masters of the social landscape so they are effortlessly able to approach a group engaging everyone and making the group feel welcome.

Magic naturally sparks people's curiosity, gets them engaged and interested. And if you book a really amazing magician, they’re going to wow everyone!

When I start performing for a small group of 3 or 4 people, it only takes seconds for groups around us to suddenly realize something amazing is happening, to turn their attention. What was once 3 or 4 people has suddenly become a group of 20. We're all laughing and smiling, bonding over something incredible and unique that's happening that you wouldn't quite expect at a corporate networking event. This is the power of the magician.

I want to touch a bit on how a corporate event magician can help boost your networking event. Boost group morale and create a unique space for people not just to have a great time and be entertained, but also to provide a space where people feel comfortable, welcome, and have the desire to meet new people.

Breaking the Ice with a Corporate Event Magician

Let's talk a bit about crowd interaction and how a magician applies their skills to your group. Magicians often involve audience members in their tricks, making people feel included.

These moments become instant conversation starters, even after the magician is done performing and leaves your group, everyone is still talking about how impossible that magic trick was!

Your friends and coworkers and colleagues might say, how did he do that? I was right there. I still can't figure it out! This creates excitement. Suddenly, you're effortlessly conversing with your coworkers, meeting new people. And what before felt like an awkward obligation to network now feels natural and you're having fun.

Revitalizing the Room with Energy and Surprise

As I touched on a bit earlier, corporate event magicians are a great energy booster and fantastic masters at revitalizing the room. Magic has an element of surprise and can break the traditional networking structure.

As a magician, it's not uncommon that when I attend a networking event, it can be, for lack of a better word, a bit boring. 99% of networking events I attend as a magician start out the same. There's a bar. Perhaps there's a musician playing in the background. A few games are around the corner, but for the most part, all these events are the same and I have a feeling that a majority of the attendees have been to dozens of these events in their career.

That's where the problem sets in. These sorts of events become an obligation. You're there simply to show face because you're either required to or it's just part of your company's culture.

But when I approach a group and I introduce myself and say, hi, I'm Spencer, I'm the in-house corporate event magician, do you guys want to see something amazing? Instantly, the look on people's faces change. They suddenly realize this event is different. I've piqued their curiosity. I have their attention. And now I'm ready to do my job and blow their minds!

My favorite part about performing close up magic in this sort of environment is the way I'm able to involve the entire group. I don't just choose one person to help me. I get everybody in on it. I make eye contact with everyone, ask everyone's name, I start introducing people to each other who don't know each other. All under the guise of a magic trick.

Creating Lasting Connections Through Shared Experiences

It feels natural. It feels organic. We're just hanging out, having a good time. I'm simply a corporate event magician, showing them something amazing. Little do they know, I'm secretly making connections.

What's not important is the validation that I received, but more importantly, the fact that everyone now has something in common. That group who maybe only knew each other a little bit, or not at all, now have a shared experience. They will forever be able to reminisce and remember the magician they saw at their corporate event. And that in turn allows conversations to develop, friendships, to form bonds to be made in a professional networking environment, which is the entire purpose of the event to begin with.
