Hey, I'm Spencer Grey. I'm a magician and mentalist who's performed at all kinds of events, but there's something special about Sober Grad Nights. These are late-night, school-sponsored celebrations for high school seniors, designed to give them a fun and safe way to celebrate graduation, without drugs or alcohol. And I can tell you firsthand: adding interactive magic show to the mix is a game-changer.

What Is Grad Night Magician (a.k.a. Sober Grad Night)?

Grad Night is typically held on the night of graduation, either on school campuses or at off-site venues like community centers, amusement parks, or even cruise ships. I've performed on everything from gym floors to boats like Luxe Cruises in San Francisco. The goal is simple: keep students safe and entertained.

Most events offer casino tables, food vendors, games, raffles, music, and more. But what really stands out and gets students talking is live entertainment like hiring a magician. That’s where magic and mentalism come in.

Two Powerful Magic Options for Grad Night

Let’s break down the two most popular types of magic I perform at these events:

  1. Strolling Magic (a.k.a. Roving or Walkaround Magic) This is where I roam the party, approaching small groups of students and performing magic inches from their faces. Think card tricks, coins, and visual illusions like vanishes or transpositions, just like what they see on TikTok, but live.

I also incorporate mind reading: asking students to think of a friend’s name or a personal word, then revealing it through psychological techniques. It’s interactive, personal, and a huge hit.

This format is great because it doesn’t require a stage or sound system. I go where the action is or where there’s a lull and bring the energy directly to students sitting at tables or hanging out.

  1. Stage Show

This is a high-energy, 30-45 minute interactive performance. Students get called onstage, illusions happen with their participation, and the show is packed with comedy, visual magic, and mind reading. It’s a huge bonding moment and makes for incredible memories. Students scream, cheer, and film it for social media. Many have never seen live magic before, so it leaves a real impression.

Why Interactive Magic Works So Well for Teens

Unlike passive entertainment, magic gets students involved. They don’t just watch the show they become the show. This keeps them energized and present throughout the event. Even after the magic ends, students keep talking about it. They try to figure out how things worked, share videos, and even learn tricks themselves and become magicians. I’ve handed out decks of cards to students who showed interest and watched them perform tricks for their friends. That’s what you want from a grad night: fun that sticks.

Magic Builds Confidence, Not Just Excitement

Magic can actually help build self-esteem. It’s something cool that students feel proud to experience and share. It’s not childish it’s smart, surprising, and, when done right, very on-trend for teens today.

I’ve Done This Before—And Schools Keep Bringing Me Back!

I’ve had the pleasure of performing at schools like John Pittman High in Turlock, Saratoga High in Saratoga, and Sobrato High in Morgan Hill. Most of these schools rebook me the very next day for the following year. That’s how much students (and parents) love it!

Logistics: When and How to Schedule the Magic & Mentalism Show

Grad Nights can run late, sometimes all the way until sunrise. I’ve performed at events that lasted until 6am or the mentalist show doesn't begin until at least halfway through the event.

Here’s my tip: schedule magic in the middle of the event. Students are usually exhausted by the end of the night, so it’s best to place high-energy performances earlier, when they’re more engaged. Save more relaxed activities like raffles or movies for the tail end.

Bonus: I Can Help Host the Event Too

Many schools ask me to emcee raffles or make announcements after the show. I’m always happy to do this at no extra charge—it keeps the energy going and adds value for the organizers.

Booking Timeline: Don’t Wait

The best time to book a grad night magician is a few months in advance. But if you want a performer with experience and solid reviews, earlier is better. Some schools lock me in a year ahead—sometimes the day after their current grad night ends.

Technical Stuff Like Sound Systems

Most grad nights already have a DJ or sound system, but I always bring a backup. I’ve learned to be fully self-contained and adaptable.

Reviews from Teachers and Parents

Don’t just take my word for it—here’s what real schools, parents, and students have to say about booking a grad night magician. These reviews highlight what it’s actually like to bring live magic into a graduation celebration. Whether it’s an all-night event or a shorter performance during a senior send-off, these shows consistently leave a lasting impression. See why schools keep coming back year after year. This is the same intelligent show I perform as a corporate magician for big companies across the San Francisco Bay Area.

Spencer is amazing. He hosted a party for us where the attendees were a mix of seniors, adults, teens and kids - and everyone was blown away by his magic. He kept the party going and energy levels high and needles to say, as a host I felt like I had stress free time of being able to mingle with friends and family without constantly worrying that everyone else was getting bored.
